PROJECT: SELF PORTRAIT

Describe your favorite animal. Describe your favorite color. A brief theory in psychology. . . Your description of your favorite animal is how you indirectly see yourself. Your description of your favorite color is how other people indirectly see you. You might be more beautiful than you thought you were, or maybe you did not know you had an ugly side. And you may be more loved than you imagined.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Aerykah Matthews channels much of her energy through art, as portrayed in the action of this painting. Here she paints a self-portrait, though her persona is not limited to the one human figure in the scene. Rather, the majority of her personality is revealed through the animals and even the character of the brushstrokes and paint marks. The artist clearly defines her free spirit while leaving room for mystery.”
